Free Grateful Dead Downloads Dead At Dead.net

One of the biggest attractions on the Grateful Deads’ Dead.net has always been the Taper’s Section where each week a new gen was pulled from the band’s legendary vault and made available for download as a free mp3.

Not anymore. Thanks to the folks at Rhino Records, who now controls most of the Dead’s catalog, the shows are only available streamed directly from the site.

“Please note that beginning today all Taper’s Section audio streams are served via a new media player in both Windows Media Audio and QuickTime Audio formats.”

No more free downloads. No more continuing the Deadhead tradition of sharing shows with your friends.  Check out what some fans had to say about it here and leave us your comments below.

    Hey now!

No biggy, I downloaded hundreds of shows off of the Internet Archive, and they’re still up: copy this into your browser for tons of rated Dead shows: http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3AGratefulDead%20-%2Fmetadata%2Fstream_only%3A%281%29

Also, if you’re into sharing shows or live videos or any large files in general with your friends, try out this free, killer software: http://www.gigatribe.com

This NEVER would have happened if Jerry was still alive, and I hope that wherever he is he doesn’t know this is happening with his music. Jerry always thought that music should be free anyway esp shows he thought after he played it, it belonged to everyone. I really hope this isn’t a new trend in our scene
