5 New Indie Bands You Need To Know About
Here’s this week’s installment. Click on the band name for song previews and downloads.
Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gone
Armed with heartbreaking melodies, crashing drums and a tornado of white noise, Glasvegas are the thrilling sound of young Scotland. Well-versed in rock’s rich history, they marry classic 50’s song writing with the sinister fuzz of Suicide and the Velvets. Yet these are songs that could only ever have come from spending the last two decades in Glasgow’s notorious East End. Check out Daddy’s Gone – the NME and XFM single of the week.
The Real Heat - Hearts Not In It
Like your girls a bit dirty? Girls who seductively wink at you whilst simultaneously sneering at your suspect trainer choice? Think the Sugababes if they’d actually had the nouce to do their own street styling, or Bananarama if they’d lived their teenage years in 80’s New York strip clubs instead of the Pop Factory…
Redwire – Lipstick Burns Whilst getting somewhat suspicious of bands who claim they played a major festival this year without specifying which stage, hence having to assume they turned up with a guitar and serenaded their mates round the campfire, these Bradford lads are definitely good enough to have a proper slot at the Leeds/Reading one of these days… jaunty new wave indie with a disgruntled swagger…all he wants is a kiss, go on make his day!
Rebecca Rothwell – Unexpected This writer admits to having bumped into, or, put more pointedly, being manhandled into an awkward meeting in the street with this singer songwriter at the recent In The City conference in Manchester, a Mecca for unsigned acts of dubious talent. However, by comparison to the myriad of indistinct indie guitar bands she stood out, and this song, initially quietly unassuming in character, grows on you beautifully… and the ending is so obvious yet works a treat!
Pinstripe – Did I Say Pinstripe had the distinction of being handpicked by Michael Eavis to appear at this year’s Glastonbury and to all intents went down a bit of a storm. They cite Oasis and Muse as inspirations and certainly Innocent shares plenty in common with the latter band. The guitars are loud, sweeping and epic in scope, while the song itself builds to quite a euphoric finale. Just occasionally, Josh Thorner’s vocals sound a little like James’ Tim Booth’s. With this in mind, it’s worth keeping an eye on the band as they clearly have a keen ear for a strong melody and a rousing indie-pop tune.

Most of artists here are not indie at all.
What is your definition of indie music?
Nothing new or interesting there.
It is just not well made commercial product for stupid dancing club, unfinished folk songs that going nowhere etc.

They said it was their first show, but I was blown away. A band from the States I caught last month in a North Carolina dive before my flight. The only thing I’ve found are a few songs on myspace. Fucking brilliant.
Yeah, their name was Pilgrim X. Sorry………
What would you propose then?
