Music sales dropped 15% or more over 2006.  Sales were down 21% in the week before Christmas alone. But 2007 was the year that fans regained control of the music.

Three of the four top label groups (EMI, Universal, and and last week WMG) stopped adding restrictive software to their downloads. This means 80% of all hit music is now available DRM free.
Amazon.com opened an all mp3 store where every track you buy is playable on any brand of player and can be burned to a CD.

Today Amazon.com announced that DRM-free music downloads from Warner Music Group of record labels (Warner, Elektra, Atlantic and more) are available (exclusively for now) on Amazon MP3. This means that acts like The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rob Thomas, Diddy, The Eagles, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Metallica and man others are available for the first time in a format that can be played on virtually any player and burned to a CD with ease.

Hypebot announced the winners of its 2007 Best Music Blogs contest.
Concert giant Live Nation shared details of its plan to move its ticketing from Ticketmaster; a move that should be good for fans.
Warner Music Group settled its lawsuit with XM over the Pioneer Inno radio. This year-end deal followed a similar settlement between Universal Music and XM as that major label group continued to pursue its “toll booth’ strategy of charging device manufacturers for music use.  This could mean slightly higher prices on portable music players.

When you pay for a download, don’t you expect it to sound as good as if you’d bought a CD?
Different download services sell downloads at different qualities. Lower kbps (kilobits per second) means the track will take up less space on your portable player. But the higher the kbps, the better it will sound. You may not notice it on your iPod, Zune or computer. But burn the download onto a CD or stream it through your home stereo and the difference becomes very clear.
