Last Week’s Music Industry News And How It Could Effect You…

  • Major label layoffs have begun at Sony BMG and Universal’s Island Def Jam. Will they spread? The latest rumors center on Geffen and Columbia. This means more bands without support from their record labels too.
  • Nokia’s new “Comes With Music” for new cell phones features free music from Universal  Records, but comes heavily laden with restrictive DRM.  Cool idea – unlimited free downloads to your cell for a year after you buy it – but then they lock them down and won’t let you transfer the songs to other players or phones or burn a CD.
  • Nabbr launched a viral music video player for web sites with content from all four major labels.
  • UK download store 7Digital is getting aggressive with lower pricing and new features and appears ready to enter the US download market. (Keep your fingers crossed!)
  • MySpace’s new Transmissions series offers new video interviews and performances.  First up is James Blunt  and keep an eye out for more soon.
  • Join the debate on which new record label models will survive.
  • Sunday 12/9 is the last day to add your nominations to Hypebot’s first annual Music Blog Awards.
