How To Unlock An iPod Even If You’ve Lost The Code

Has someone given you an iPod but not the code; or maybe you simply forgot the code that you originally entered? Here are several ways you may be able to unlock it:

METHOD #1 - Experiment with some logical code combinations like dates or luck numbers. Try obvious codes like 1111 or 1234. Enter the combinations on the iPod using the same controls you used to set the combination. If you do not enter the correct combination, the digits onscreen flash red. When you enter the combination correctly, iPod will unlock and return you to the last viewed screen.

METHOD #2 – Connect your iPod to a computer (preferably the the same one that you used to synch the iPod to iTunes with) and open iTunes. When you disconnect you iPod from the computer it should no longer be locked.

METHOD #3 - If all else fails you’ll have to retore you iPod to the original factory settings which means that ALL THE MUSIC, VIDEOS AND DATA YOU STORED WILL BE LOST. Hopefully you baked it up and can restore it. If not you’re starting from scratch. Here are the restore instructions from Apple:

How to restore iPod

1. Ensure that you have an active Internet connection as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may need to be downloaded to your computer.
2. Download and install the latest version of iTunes if you do not already have it installed.
3. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
4. After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
5. Select your iPod in the Source panel and you will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
6. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:
7.
* Restore Option 1: Restore – Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
* Restore Option 2: Use Same Version – Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod even though a newer version is available.
* Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version – Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
* Restore Option 4: Restore and Update – Restores with the latest iPod Software available.
8. If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.
9. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
10.
* Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
* Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
11. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
12. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

Ok whoever made this thing is retarded because in order to get you ipod into itunes to reset it you must put in the pass code which obviously these people have lost so thats not an option to fixing it.

    Boys and Girls,
I was at my wits’s end just a few minutes ago. A little browsing and I found that you can easily plug in your iPod into your computer, open it from “My computer” in Windows XP or Right Click and choose “Browse Folder” in Ubuntu, and navigate to: YOUR IPOD NAME/iPod_Control/Device/ Then, you should find a file with the name “_locked” or something similar. Just get rid of that trouble-maker file and disconnect your iPod as you would normally. And Voila!!! I JUST DID THAT and there’s no reason it should not work for you! :)

    Bonne chance!

This just happened to me. If you don’t have the primary computer, you can do this:

Since I already have an application called InVisibles, I can view hidden files on my mac and iPod. If you turn on this or a similar app that shows hidden files, you can go into finder, click on the go to your iPod (plug it in first), and in one of the hidden files there is a unix file that says “_locked”. Just delete this and your ipod will be back to normal with no deleted files.

I have another question: I have 2 ipods and neither were synced on my computer I’m using now. I don’t have access to the computers they were synced on. Can I transfer music from one ipod to the other? If so, how do I do it? Thanks for the techi help from an untechi soul!

IF YOU HAVE AN IPOD CLASSIC – (because thats what i have & used) if you open my computer and then connect your ipod to the computer. when it comes up click on your ipod and then go to *ipod control* then *device* and delet the file called *locked*
when you take your ipod out of your computer it should work. mine did.
