The B5Media network:

It’s A Bad Time To Buy Downloads

Itching to fill up that iPod or Zune that you got for Christmas?  You might want to stick to ripping your old CD’s for just a couple more weeks and wait for some expected fan friendly changes take hold.

Right now about half of the downloads you buy on iTunes and most other stores still come with DRM – that pesky copy protection software that makes it impossible to buy songs for the Zune on iTunes or grab a track from Napster for your iPod.  The same software limits how many times you can rip the music you paid for to CD’s.

But it’s all about to change.

Last week Sony BMG became the last major label group to drop DRM and announce that DRM-free mp3’s would be available before the end of the month on Amazon.  Other download services should also get DRM-free tracks a few weeks later.

So unless you can find what you want on Amazon’s big all mp3 store, I suggest that you avoid confusion,  save your money and wait a few weeks to buy downloads.  And stay tuned to Our Digital Music for updates and details.
