5 New Indie Bands You Need To Know About
Stricken City – Better As A Girl
Girl fronted Indie, with the charm and wit of early Smiths, and the power of Patti Smith. They have the energy to knock the socks of their rivals, the style and sound to appeal to the obligatory east London set, and the pure pop sensibilities to appeal to the mass market. They really should be a massive hit in 2008. (bardensbar)
Mika Cole - Next Door
Here we go: the sweet sounds of the acoustic guitar played by tender fingers. All is needed is a placid voice. And we’ve got it. Mika boasts of sounding like artists like Joss Stone and India Arie. Of course I am going to listen! Her track, ‘Next Door,’ is filled with Mika’s vocal range. Also check out her track, ‘I Do.’ This sounds like classic old school rhythm and blues.
Man From Michael – Heart Of Glue
Starting like Razorlight’s Somewhere Else but rapidly entering more retro territory, Man From Michael certainly know their way around a catchy tune. Heart of Glue is full of soul in the same way as The Coral, and the confidence bleeds out of the speakers. More understated than the majority of other news bands entering the arena, the subtle approach may well prove to win the hearts of punters bored of style over substance.
The Dizzy Lab – Runnin Outta Time
Upon a gloomy melody with pounding bass, tip toeing synths and hand claps Traka delivers earnest verses filled with silent cries for life’s hardships. ‘F- a diary. I’ll write my life in rhymes,’ says Traka before the chorus arrives. The producer on this track is Dizzy Dash. Dizzy’s ‘Lab’ is filled with other tracks where he lays out the melody for his emcees. Check him out.
Strawberry Story – Gone Like Summer
Forged from candyfloss and mint cracknel in the late eighties, Strawberry Story was a heady mix of fuzzed out guitars, dense bass lines and joyously girly singing. The band reformed for a one off gig in June 2007 which, luckily for all of us, wetted their appetite for more. Who can forget their triumphant return to London at Monkey Chews last September? For fans of The Shop Assistants, Darling Buds and The Primitives.
