5 New Indie Bands You’ll Want To Know About

by bhoughton on February 29th, 2008

The Red Romance - Hesitate
Having toured with indie pop kings The Killers on several occasions, New York band The Red Romance have always aimed high… and it’s certainly a mystery why they’re not yet ruling the airwaves with their lush and gloriously infectious 80s influenced romantic rock. Could 2008 be their year? It certainly should be.

Zuby - Before
The Oxford pupil, Zuby, showcases his intelligent lyrics over a syncopated symphonic melody on his delightful track, ‘Before.’ In the background are stuttering bass lines and a sample of an old man moaning. indiestore listeners should also place their mouse on  ‘Start All Over’ featuring Webbafied. This is samplicious (a cosmic sample that arouses). Twenty bucks (pounds, whatever) says you cannot identify the sample.

The Chapman FamilyThe Kids Are Not Alright (remix)
Formed as an antithesis to the barrage of post Libertines paint-by-number indie bands with mockney accents and trilbies, the fantastic Chapman Family proudly and confidently make dark post-punk, rich in sharp guitars, drum machine beats and dry, angry lyrics. It may not be as radio-friendly but it’s so much more exciting. Their motto, emblazoned across merchandise, sinisterly states “The Chapman Family is not a cult”, however, they may just convert you.

T . Sta - Simple Timing
Ambient music this definitely is. For this week, why not dig into the crates of trip hop?  What have I found? Umbrella music: music for the psychedelics. The sound quality of artist, T.Sta’s, music is extraordinary adding to musical vibes coming from this sound where jazz has been yanked from its forefathers and installed over clear and stimulating percussion that owes its life to hip hop. I assume that the title of his track, ‘Simple Timing,’ refers to how punctual his breaks are.  Nice song.

Magic ArmOutdoor Games
“These lo-fi ambitionists sound fantastic on this side of the Atlantic tonight. Here we have a British band that sparkle with the subtleties of sound and glimpses of brand new sonic dimensions you knew existed but never looked for; repeated mantras become forgotten questions, as this occurs familiar but quieter sounds ascend and become just as grand as the first time someone asked you ‘what are you going to do about it’.”
