Broken Gear? Always Check For A Recall

by bhoughton on January 29th, 2008

Do you have a portable player or other piece of electronic gear that broke after the warranty has ended?  Don’t throw it in the trash yet.

1st - What credit card did you buy in on? Some American Express and other cards double or extend the manufacturers warranty if you bought it on the card.

2nd - Check to see if there’s been a recall.  Google the make and model number and see what pops up.   Here’s an example:

“I Googled the maker (Toshiba) and the model number (SD-3980SU2), and immediately came up with an information page about a recall. One 5-minute phone call later, and I am expecting a new, 2008 model of the DVD player to arrive within a couple of weeks. I will have to package up the old DVD player and mail it in, but a new DVD player is worth a trip to the post office any day in my book. ” - WiseBread

3rd - Call the store you bought it at and then the manufacturer and politely ask for help.  The odds of this last strategy working are small, but seem worth 10 minutes of your life to find out.
