Now Is Not The Time To Subscribe To XM Or Sirius

by bhoughton on July 24th, 2007

XM and Sirius are seeking government permission to merge the two services and the odds are fairly strong that they will get it.  What does this mean for current subscirbers?

Both services promise that little will change and current subscriptions will stay in effect.  But in an attempt to gain regulatory approval, the two services jointly announced today that if allowed to combine they will offer lower priced XM Siriuspackages including some ala carte channel offerings.  Combined players that receive both XM and Sirius are also promised.

One proposed option allows subscribers to choose 50 channels for $6.99 - a 46% decrease from the current Sirius standard subscription of $12.95. Under this option customers will also be able to add channels for as little as 25 cents each. The second a la carte option will allow subscribers to choose 100 channels and allow Sirius customers to select from some XM programming and visa versa.

So before you get locked into a more costly plan or a player that offers only one satellite service; consider waiting a few months and watch this blog for details.
